BRITAIN should ensure that employers retain access to both skilled and unskilled workers from the European Union as it begins talks to leave the bloc or there is a risk of damaging United Kingdom businesses, a research report by two think tanks said on Monday.
David Davis, the UK Secretary of State for Leaving the European Union, and the bloc's Chief Negotiator for BrexitMichel Barnier met in Brussels for the first day of talks on Monday morning, as the two parties try to disentangle Britain from Europe. Gabriel said. "Now there is a hard, even impossible situation without any clear majorities or negotiating strategy, he added".
Davis, a prominent tough-talking figure in the "Leave" campaign, sounded a positive note, saying that while there would "undoubtedly be challenging times ahead" he wanted a good relationship with the EU.
Brexit negotiations which could define the UK's political and economic future have begun, with David Davis calling for a "new deep and special partnership" between Britain and Brussels. However, they already appeared comfortable with each other and on first name terms. European Union diplomats hope this first meeting, and a Brussels summit on Thursday and Friday where May will encounter but not negotiate with fellow European Union leaders, can improve the atmosphere after some spiky exchanges.
Mr Barnier said: "Our aim is to have one week of negotiations every month and use the time in between to work on proposals".
Rob Johnston, chief executive of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, said: "We called last week for the major parties to put aside their differences and work together to establish a common negotiating position on Brexit". "In the first step we will deal with the most pressing issues, in the second step will scope our future partnership", added Barnier.
In a joint document released by the British government, the negotiators said they had established initial groups to talk on citizens' rights, the financial settlement for Britain's departure and other issues regarding the separation.
May was hoping to increase her support in the British election on June 8, but instead her party lost its outright majority and now has to try to form a workable government with a tiny party from Northern Ireland. As in any divorce, count on both sides to be picky in splitting the goods and dues.
"In the first step, we will deal with the most pressing issues".
Johnson also urged Europeans to look further down the road. But while Britain may be exercising its sovereign right to leave, Barnier said, "The United Kingdom will no longer enjoy the same rights and advantages as European Union members".
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Monday he still thinks that the Brexit negotiations will yield "a happy resolution that can be done with profit and honor for both sides". At a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg, he said: "The most important thing for us is to look to the horizon, raise our eyes to the horizon".
