Australia suspends air strikes in Syria after US downing of Syrian jet

Russia, which is a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has said it will treat USA -led coalition as potential targets and track them with missile systems and military aircraft.

"The regime's forces have mounted large-scale attacks using planes, artillery, and tanks since June 17", Syrian Democratic Forces spokesman Talal Selo said in a statement.

Russia's defence ministry has announced it is ending US-Russian co-operation in Syria, which had been created to prevent a direct conflict between the two powers.

The Prime Minister pointed to "deconfliction arrangements" with Moscow, which are created to prevent mid-air incidents between coalition and Russian planes operating in the crowded airspace over Syria.

There are fears Canadian military aircraft operating over Syria could be caught in the middle of a new and potentially explosive dispute between the US and Russian Federation. Those forces, which are aligned with the U.S.in the campaign against the Islamic State group, warned Syrian government troops to stop their attacks or face retaliation.

The ministry also called on the USA military to provide a full account of why it chose to shoot down the Syrian SU-22. The cause then was the US missile strikes on Syria in response to Assad's deadly chemical attack in the country's Idlib province.

The US military statement said it acted in "collective self-defence" of its partner forces and the US did not seek a fight with the Syrian Government or its Russian supporters.

Moscow has condemned the USA downing of the Syrian government fighter jet after it dropped bombs nears US partner forces.

The remarks came amid questions whether the strike - Iran's first in the Syrian war - had been effective.

The Syrian opposition, which once dreamed of sweeping into Damascus and toppling Assad, is now largely confined to scattered enclaves in the northwest and south of the country.

After the three encounters, Assad's forces wheeled around and seized territory to the north all the way to the Iraqi border, leaving USA forces and their allies largely isolated in the southeast and cutting off their path to the Islamic State group. The agreement covers four zones in Syria where the rebels are fighting pro-government forces. Also, Iran fired several ballistic missiles Sunday night at IS positions in eastern Syria.

Syrian attacks have targeted SDF areas near the town of Tabqa and the adjacent dam, said Selo.

Russia's foreign ministry accused Washington of failing to use the hotline before downing the plane near Raqa, and called for a "careful investigation by the U.S. command" into the incident.
