Attorney General Jeff Sessions denies 'false and scurrilous allegations'

The deputy attorney general, a civil servant, assured a congressional committee he would resist an unwarranted dismissal order: "I'm not going to follow any order unless I believe they are lawful and appropriate orders".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions heatedly denied on Tuesday that he had any undisclosed meeting with the Russian ambassador or conversations with Russian officials about the US elections.

Sessions refused to say whether he had ever discussed the Russian Federation investigation with Trump, arguing that he could not disclose private communications with the president.

A Trump loyalist and early backer of the billionaire businessman's presidential bid, the 70-year-old Sessions has recused himself from all ongoing Russian Federation investigations.

The US Attorney General has denied that he had any secret meetings with Russian Federation before the US election.

Sessions, despite repeatedly being pushed by the Democratic Senators refused to give details of his communications with the President.

Other Democrats also lost their patience with Sessions.

"You are obstructing that congressional investigation by not answering that question", charged Senator Marin Heinrich.

"I am not stonewalling!"

"If he hasn't, then I'm in error", Sessions said.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire the special prosecutor overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.

While the Justice Department has said Sessions recused himself in March because of his involvement in Trump's campaign, Comey testified that the Federal Bureau of Investigation knew of information that would have made it "problematic" for Sessions to be involved.

Using all the skills in filibustering and diversion that he learned in years as an Alabama senator, the Attorney General appeared to escape the hearing without major political damage. "I don't understand how you could have it both ways", he said.

Varney replied: "I do think it's a shame that our nation's business should be put on hold while we spend all of our time looking at James Comey testifying, Jeff Sessions testifying, about what I think, frankly, are minuscule matters".

Sessions said he had confidence in special counsel Robert Mueller, and said that his recusal from the Russian Federation probe would stop him taking part in any hypothetical effort to remove him.

Sessions declined to comment on those reports, stating only that he had "confidence" in Mueller and would not be involved in any effort, should it arise, to fire the special counsel.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says he consults with a career ethics official when questions arise about Attorney General Jeff Sessions' recusal from the Russian Federation investigation.

Addressing allegations that he had unreported meetings with Russian officials while he advised the Trump campaign, Sessions said he had already acknowledged two encounters past year with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

His impassioned response came after Senate Democrats raised questions about whether Sessions privately met with Sergey Kislyak at an April 2016 foreign policy event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

Sessions also pushed back against Comey's suggestion he may have failed to take appropriate steps to protect the Federal Bureau of Investigation chief from political pressure. Wyden went on to state that he wanted to know what was problematic in Comey's view, leading Sessions to angrily claim that he didn't know and felt he was being slandered. But he said that he was unable to say whether he had discussed Comey's handling of the FBI investigation on the principle that his conversations with the President should be kept confidential. What happened when Sessions left the room, and Trump allegedly pressed Comey to end an investigation?
