Amateur Scheffler plays with poise at US Open

Thomas shot 9-under par at Erin Hills on Saturday, breaking Johnny Miller's record for lowest single-round score in relation to par in U.S. Open history.

Winning the U.S. Open is something he has thought about many times, the 26-year-old from Southport said.

Thomas is one shot behind the leader American Brian Harmon. He is at 11 under, two shots ahead of Charley Hoffman and Tommy Fleetwood.

Thomas, decked out in fluorescent pink trousers, was on the move quickly with a birdie-birdie start and had an even hotter finish to his front nine, carding birdies on four-of-five closing holes, including the last three to move to seven-under.

Fleetwood's second shot on the par-five 18th finished just 47 yards from the pin. Thomas's ball landed softly on the green and settled eight feet right of the hole.

And it was pretty obvious Thomas was on the verge of a special round when he sank this remarkable putt. He then calmly sank the putt for the record round and to take a two-shot lead into the clubhouse.

Mind that fescue! Here's a list of big-hitting big names whose radars have been skew-whiff at this week's US Open, and have thus been packed off home as a result: Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson, Charl Schwartzel, Thomas Pieters, Bubba Watson, Jon Rahm, Angel Cabrera, the world number three Jason Day, the world number two Rory McIlroy, and the reigning champion and world number one Dustin Johnson.

But this is still an impressive scorecard. I just struggled on the greens. "We're definitely in good position for tomorrow". "But obviously, I haven't done that here". It would do the same for Thomas and Reed, not to mention Harman, Koepka and Fleetwood.

Oosthuizen, whose sole major title to date came at St Andrews in 2010, birdied the first, fourth, seventh and eighth to move to four under par, while 2015 victor Spieth had covered his first 11 holes in level par.

Johnson, McIlroy, Day all miss cut; 4-way tie at top
QUOTEWORTHY: "I'm not here on the weekend, so it's unfortunate". "Show up for the last six holes, anyway", McIlroy said. Open late Friday became at least as much about who is out than who is in. "Mistakes got exaggerated a little bit more".

US Rep. Scalise's condition upgraded to 'serious' after shooting
The round fragmented, and caused significant damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels. A spokesperson for MedStar Washington Hospital Center also could not be reached.

Johnson insisted he was happy with his long game at Erin Hills, but he could not back up his ball striking with his putting as he failed to build on a positive start to his second round.

From that near meltdown, he hit the next wedge to 3 feet and made the putt to save a 6. He made bogey but rallied with three straight birdies on the back nine that produced the loudest roars of the late afternoon.

The 'board was so bunched, players could spend the entire day within a few shots of the lead and hardly get a whiff of screen time on the Fox telecast.

Jordan Spieth is not among them.

Yet none of them went away complaining about Erin Hills, only about their inability to play to their potential.

But Thomas is no stranger to records.

Thomas, decked out in shocking fluorescent pink trousers, produced a no less electric performance signing for nine-under 63 to equal the lowest numerical score in a major and the best ever in the 117-year history of the U.S. Open in relation to par.

The day indeed belonged to J.T., but will the title?
