30 people taken to London hospitals after fire

A number of people have been killed in a huge fire which engulfed a 27-storey block of flats in central London on Wednesday, London Fire Brigade said.

The fire brigade said 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters had been called to the blaze at Grenfell Tower, which has 120 flats.

So far the London Ambulance service has confirmed 30 people have been taken to hospitals across the capital, but there are still "a significant number of people" unaccounted for.

Multiple people are being treated for injuries and residents are being evacuated.

THE 24-storey tower block is in an area of West London, very close to Latimer Road Station.

Minutes of a KCTMO board meeting on 20 July 2016 said that the company was told to install self-closing devices on all flat entrance doors and review ventilation in lifts and communal staircases.

A fire and rescue service earlier said the building had 27 floors.

The cause of the fire, which broke out just before 1am local time, is not known, the Fire Brigade said. Clement's church are in wheelchairs and have been brought from adjacent buildings that were evacuated by firefighters because of fears the fire might spread.

"I was just screaming at people: "Get out, get out" and they were screaming back at me: "We can't, the corridors are full of smoke", he told BBC Radio. "They couldn't stop the fire".

MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan announces fast, invites agitating farmers for talks
She said she had gone to meet the Chief Minister to ask for help, hearing his appeal to farmers to come and air their grievances. In the last 10 days, farmers resorted to violence during their stir for various demands, including a complete loan waiver.

He said he saw people waving torches from the top level of the building and saw rescuers "doing an incredible job" trying to get people out.

The tower, built in 1974, recently underwent an £8.6m redevelopment, with some residents reporting most of the flaming debris falling from the structure was cladding added during that process.

Four hours after the alarm was raised, flames could still be seen on several floors of the blackened residential building, which was shrouded in a cloud of thick black smoke.

The London Fire Brigade said it believed it was due to a faulty Whirlpool tumble dryer which was subject to "corrective action" by the manufacturer and was due to be seen by an engineer.

London's fire commissioner says there have been a number of fatalities in a high-rise fire in west London. It's gone. It's just a matter of time before this building collapses. I saw a man who flew out of his window, I saw people screaming for help.

The Grenfell tower block fire is the second major fire to take place in West London in the past year.

"I was in bed and heard "beep, beep, beep" and thought, 'I'll get up and run downstairs as quickly as I could'".

A resident action group had warned of the potential fire risk in the Grenfell Tower apartment block almost 18 months ago, saying a build-up of rubbish during development works posed a serious fire risk.

"We declared a major incident very early, which meant not just the fire service but also the London Ambulance Service, the police and the others were involved at the scene".
