A man has contracted the first human case of the West Nile virus of 2017 in Southern Nevada, public health authorities reported Thursday.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reminds residents that the best way to prevent West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses to is prevent mosquito bites.

"Everyone older than six months of age should use repellent outdoors", said Dr. Eden Wells, chief medical executive of MDHHS.

People are being warned to take steps to prevent mosquito bites, which can transmit the virus. More serious complications include neurological illnesses, such as meningitis and encephalitis.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is holding a rare closed-door session with the full Senate. In late morning trading, the benchmark S&P 500 was up about a third of a percent.

The health district says residents can lessen their chances of contracting the illnesses by using EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET (diethyltoluamide), Picaridin, IR3535, Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), or 2-undecanone; wearing trousers and long-sleeved shirts to reduce mosquito exposure when outdoors; and eliminating areas of standing water around the home, including non-circulating ponds, "green" swimming pools and accumulated sprinkler runoff.

The mosquitoes that transmit West Nile virus may breed near people's homes in storm drains, shallow ditches, retention ponds, and unused pools. And MDHHS says that as temperatures rise, mosquitoes and the virus develop more quickly.

The birds were found sick or dead in early May and tested positive this week. Birds are the natural animal reservoir for the virus and carry it in their blood. Three birds and a bat were discovered to have the diseases, which can be harmful to humans.

For those who experience illness, it typically comes on about three to 15 days after being bitten and carries mild symptoms of fever, headache and body aches, Stanuszek said. A second crow in Saginaw County was also found to have the virus.
