In February, Vice President Tareck El Aissami became the the highest-ranking Venezuelan hit by US sanctions under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act for alleged ties to drug trafficking and one of the most-senior government leaders of any country listed by the Treasury Department under its various sanctions authorities.

"Members of the country's supreme Court of Justice have exacerbated the situation by consistently interfering with the legislative branch's authority".

The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday slapped sanctions on eight Venezuelan supreme court justices, accusing them of abusing the authority of the country's legislature. That designation means that as of Thursday, the eight magistrates' assets in the U.S are frozen and people in the USA are prohibited from doing business or transacting with them.

His statement came after a massive candle light vigil in Caracas that was held in honor of the Venezuelans who have died during the ongoing protests.

"The Venezuelan people are suffering from a collapsing economy brought about by their government's mismanagement and corruption", Steven Mnuchin, the U.S. treasury secretary, said in a statement. All of those targeted will have their assets frozen within United States jurisdiction, and American citizens will be barred from doing business with them, the Treasury Department said.
