Former national security adviser Mike Flynn's lawyers will not be honoring the Senate Intelligence Committee's subpoena for documents related to his communications with Russian officials, according to the committee's chairman. "Consistent with the committee's position since the beginning of or investigation, I welcome their willingness to cooperate", Burr said. An earlier report said that Flynn's lawyers said that he planned to ignore a Senate panel's subpoena.

The North Carolina senator later clarified his statement, leaving the question of whether Flynn would comply with the subpoena up in the air. Flynn resigned as President Donald Trump's national security adviser on February 13, 2017.

Trump's beleaguered White House was hit with yet another explosive allegation on Wednesday, after a New York Times report alleged that the US President's transition team knew that Flynn.was under federal investigation for secretly working as a paid lobbyist for Turkey weeks before the President's inauguration.

For refusing to honor a Congressional committee's subpoena, Michael Flynn could be found in contempt of Congress.

The Justice Department has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller (MUHL'-ur) as a special counsel to lead a federal investigation into allegations that Donald Trump's campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 election that put him in the White House.

Burr told reporters Thursday about the response from Flynn's lawyer. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has blamed the cleric, Fethullah Gulen, who lives in Pennsylvania, for a failed coup attempt last summer and has pressured the extradite him.

According to documents released by House Oversight Committee ranking member Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), Flynn did not disclose the RT payment when he applied to renew his security clearance in January 2016, just a month after he traveled to Moscow.

The demand is for documents related to the committee's investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election. Under 2 U.S.C. § 194, the committee and full chamber of Congress must certify the contempt referral, which is sent to a U.S. Attorney 'whose duty it shall be to bring the matter before the grand jury for its action.' Notably, a criminal contempt charge was certified against Attorney General Eric Holder, but the U.S. Attorney refused to bring it before the grand jury. Trump fired Comey last week and admitted that the bureau's Russian Federation probe was on his mind when he did so.
