UK PM May's Conservatives see poll lead narrow again

I see hospitals closing.

Jeremy Paxman had one embarrassing quotation from him in 1982 saying the war was a "Tory plot", but Corbyn, picking up speed again, swerved back off the grass verge and onto the safe line of saying he wanted negotiations.

Mr Corbyn, a committed republican, was asked by Jeremy Paxman on why abolishing the Monarchy was not in Labour's manifesto. It allowed Corbyn to pose as a consensual pragmatist who listened to his colleagues and worked with them, when in fact 172 of them said they had no confidence him less than a year ago.

During the live question and answer section, the Prime Minister was confronted by a serving police officer about "devastating" cuts during her time as home secretary.

And meantime, the much-maligned Corbyn has been running what many British pols this week told me they consider a near-flawless campaign.

Asked about plans to means-test winter fuel payments, Mrs May said she did not want to "pull out a figure", but instead "listen to people, talk to people, to take people's views and then make a proposal as a government". Given what tribulations Theresa May was about to undergo on precisely this point, it seemed quite generous to let that go.

In a sign of her ambition, she chose Labour-held Halifax to launch the Conservative manifesto on May 18. Now, after two turns of the Paxman rack, they were unfrozen again.

Corbyn past year said he regrets calling Hezbollah and Hamas his friends during a speech in parliament. I don't know if the spokesperson has clarified that one yet.

Mr Corbyn, a lifelong opponent of nuclear weapons who has made clear that he would never authorise their use, nevertheless indicated he would issue the customary final instructions to the commanders of the Trident submarine fleet if he became prime minister. "I felt that she was exploiting the situation".

In 2010, Corbyn said about Hamas during a television interview: "'You have to recognize that the reality is they have a great deal of support, they have a great deal of respect from a lot of Palestinians who wouldn't necessarily politically agree with them but recognize they are serious, hard-working and they are not corrupt".

"Sometimes you have to be hard in order to do that", she said.

Now, she is vulnerable to attack.

Today, May will claim that "economic prosperity will suffer, jobs and livelihoods will be put at risk, and with them the security and peace of mind of working families" if the government fails to secure a successful Brexit negotiation.

As her lead shrank, May was forced to backtrack on the policy at an appearance before the media on Monday at which she appeared flustered and irritated when taking questions from reporters.

Ms May was heckled and laughed at by some members of the audience at Monday's TV appearance when discussing her education policy, and when Paxman asked whether the European Union would see her as a "blowhard who collapses at the first sign of gunfire" after she softened her plans on old age care.

But Mrs May did not provide an answer to a request from the officer, whose name was given as Martin, for a specific number of additional officers which she would recruit if re-elected in the June 8 general election.
