  • Ugandan troops accused of sexual abuse in Central African Republic

"Ugandan soldiers. have sexually exploited at least 13 women and (three) girls since 2015, including at least one rape, and threatened some victims to remain silent", the rights watchdog said in its report. "Two of the women were girls when the exploitation or abuse took place", HRW said.

Fifteen of the women and girls interviewed said they became pregnant and the men responsible left the country without giving any support, the report said.

Since 2011, troops from Uganda have led an African Union (AU) mission in vehicle to eliminate fighters of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a militant group led by Kony that has killed thousands and kidnapped tens of thousands of children over the past three decades. The mission was backed by USA special advisers, who also said recently that they would draw down their involvement.

A 15-year-old girl told HRW that a Ugandan soldier had raped her in the fields near his military base in Obo in January 2016.

We're thankful for your support in every way.

All of the alleged attacks took place in the southeastern town of Obo, where the AU mission and USA forces were based.

Several victims said that Ugandan military investigators had interviewed them since 2016, but that there was no follow-up and they had no information about the investigation.

Pope's meeting with Myanmar's Suu Kyi leads to diplomatic ties
The Prince of Wales is to hold a meeting with Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi at his official London home. In April, Suu Kyi told the BBC that she did not recognize descriptions of ethnic cleansing in the region.

Since 2009, the Ugandan army has been deployed in the auto as a part of the African Union (AU)'s Regional Task Force to combat the Uganda rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), but announced it is pulling out its troops last month, saying that LRA rebel commander Joseph Kony is "no longer a threat".

They are part of a USA -supported African Union force seeking to defeat Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).

"We have a comprehensive code of conduct and laws, so anyone going against that faces the music", Karemire said. Kony remains on the run despite efforts by regional and US forces to track him down.

United States special forces were fighting alongside the Ugandan troops until last month when a planned withdrawal began.

The U.S. military command in Africa (AFRICOM) announced in March that it was pulling its counter-LRA forces from the region, stating that the militant group's numbers had been cut from nearly 2,000 to under 100 and that four of its five key leaders had been captured, with only Kony at large.

He said the Ugandan army is committed to a zero-tolerance policy for sexual exploitation and abuse. Newsweek reached out to SOCAFRICA and AFRICOM for additional comment but received no immediate reply.
