After North Korea's latest missile test, the White House released a statement highlighting how close the missile came to Russian soil - and noting "the President can not imagine that Russia is pleased".
If it had been fired at a normal angle, analysts say, it could have flown much farther - estimates vary between 4,000 and 7,000 kilometers (2,500 and 4,350 miles), the upper number putting Alaska and possibly Hawaii within striking distance.
The statement came a day before the Security Council holds an urgent session to discuss the missile test.
USA officials said the missile hit the water around 60 miles (around 100 kilometers) from eastern Russia's Vladivostok.
The country's leader, Kim Jong-un, supervised the launch of the Hwasong-12 missile that reached an altitude of 2,111.5 km and flew 787 km, according to state news agency KCNA. North Korea likely has the capacity for an electromagnetic pulse that could target the United States, said Clare Lopez, vice president for research and analysis the Center for Security Policy, a national security think tank.
On the respected 38 North website, aerospace engineering specialist John Schilling said the launch appeared to demonstrate an intermediate-range ballistic missile that could "reliably strike the USA base at Guam" in the Pacific.
The test "represents a level of performance never before seen from a North Korean missile", aerospace engineer John Schilling writes on the US-Korea Institute's blog 38 North. "Everything that we do there, every soldier on the ground, every base that's there, every mission that we conduct, is conducted with that in mind; that the USA forces are there to defend the Republic of Korea against aggression from the North, and that's true with this", he argued.

8am BST: North Korea's KCNA state news agency has claimed that the test of a "newly developed mid/long-range strategic ballistic rocket, Hwasong-12" was successful. The country's dictator Kim Jong Un is warning (he's done it before) that the country is well on its way to striking the US mainland and military bases throughout the Pacific Ocean. France and Britain on Monday both publicly supported tougher sanctions.
Despite North Korea's claim that Sunday's test simulated a re-entry situation, South Korean defense officials say the North probably has yet to master the technology.
The North has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of past year in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States - something President Donald Trump has vowed "won't happen". "We want to stand together and show a clear direction" at the 11 countries' ministerial meeting in Vietnam at the end of this week, Abe said, expressing his hope that the USA will return to the TPP.
The test was seen as a demonstration of big progress the North has made in its pursuit of development of an continental ballistic missile capable of reaching the US. North Korea also appears to have the capability to miniaturize the warheads and put them on short and medium-range ballistic missiles.
The adoption of the statement comes on the eve of an emergency, closed-door meeting of the Security Council scheduled for Tuesday.
The Security Council has adopted six sanctions resolutions against North Korea because of its missile and nuclear weapons program. The missile is known to be developed with the technology applied to submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).
