Tulsa police officer acquitted in fatal shooting of unarmed man

Betty Shelby, the white Tulsa, Oklahoma police officer who shot and killed Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man in Tulsa past year, was acquitted by a jury on Wednesday evening. After a nine hour deliberation, a jury has acquitted Shelby of felony manslaughter, according to CNN.

Shelby's lawyer, Shannon McMurray, had argued the case resulted in a prosecution because of media hysteria.

"It seems that whenever an officer takes the witness stand at a jury trial and testifies that they feared for their life, and that is the reason that they shot someone, there are some jurors who will simply not convict the officer of a crime", said Stinson. No weapon was found on his vehicle or person.

The defense was allowed to introduce testimony showing Crutcher did not comply with officers' commands in prior incidents. Officer Shelby has been on unpaid leave from the Tulsa Police Department since she was charged. Shelby was the first of several officers who responded to the call about an abandoned SUV in the middle of the road.

"And I believe that all those officers involved, they're going to be held accountable because this family right here, we believe in a higher power, we believe in a higher judge", she said. "This was a very hard case with lots of hard issues". Shelby said race was not a factor in the shooting. His father, Rev. Joey Crutcher, said he thinks Shelby "got away with murder".

She's qualified for the Wimbledon qualifying rounds but can still be handed a wild card when the decision is made on June 20. Regardless of the rhetoric, the fact is, the 2-time champion Sharapova will not be at the French Open this year.

She said a "cover-up was exposed" during the trial. "We're going to break the chains of police brutality", Tiffany Crutcher said. All the elements of manslaughter were there. Terence's hands were in the air. As Shelby approached the scene, she found Crutcher wandering around near the vehicle, rambling incoherently and placing his hands in his pockets, despite numerous warnings not to do so.

Tulsa officer Betty Shelby was found not guilty in the September 16 shooting of 40-year-old Terence Crutcher in a case that garnered national attention and widespread protest from Black Lives Matter. It does not change our recognition of the racial disparities that have afflicted Tulsa historically.

Assistant District Attorney Kevin Gray argued that even if Shelby followed her police training, which taught her that "action beats reaction", it doesn't mean she didn't commit a crime. He was holding his hands above his head when he was shot. "So we are moving forward together - Tulsans from all parts of the city, police officers and everyday citizens - with a unified objective to make this a better place for all of us". He is then shot once in the chest by Shelby and falls to the ground.

"Those who disagree with the verdict have the right to express their opinions", she said in a statement. Carrying posters, they chanted "No justice, no peace" and blocked traffic. I appeal to Tulsans and others to remain calm.

"At least four of the 12 jurors were crying as they left the courtroom and they did not look at either the family of Crutcher or Shelby".
