An early Friday morning tweet by the US President warned that ex-FBI Director James Comey "better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press".

Trump's administration - embroiled in a deepening crisis over the sacking and its shifting explanation of events - is interviewing the first candidates for the post on Saturday, US media reported. CNN said Comey is "not anxious about any tapes" Trump may have, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter.

The four are among almost a dozen candidates Mr Trump is considering, a group that includes several lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials.

The 49-year-old McCabe, a career FBI agent, has taken part in a number of high-profile investigations, including probes into the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 and the attacks against United States installations in Benghazi, Libya in 2012.

The New York Times said Comey told associates he declined to make a pledge of loyalty to Trump when the president requested it while they dined just seven days after his inauguration.

"Under normal circumstances, we would not consider credible any claims that the White House may have taped conversations of meetings with the President", the letter stated.

"I think the process is going to go quickly", he said, adding that the candidates under consideration were mostly well known.

Adam Lee, special agent in charge of the FBI's Richmond, Virginia, office, was also interviewing Saturday afternoon.

"We can make a fast decision", Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One before flying to southern Virginia, where he delivered his first commencement address as president at Liberty University, an evangelical Christian school.

The president is considering 11 people to replace Mr Comey, a White House official said.

The day after acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe contradicted a number of the Trump administration's talking points about James Comey's firing during sworn testimony, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer refused to confirm whether Trump has confidence in McCabe.
