Former FBI Director James Comey, who was shockingly fired by President Trump on Tuesday, has declined a bipartisan invitation from Senators Richard Burr and Mark Warner to testify during a closed session of the Senate Intelligence Committee next Tuesday. They are among almost a dozen candidates Trump is considering, a group that includes several lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials.

McCabe contradicted Trump this week, telling lawmakers that Comey enjoyed widespread support among the FBI's rank and file, and that the probe into alleged Russian meddling in the election was a "highly significant investigation".

"We can make a fast decision", Mr Trump said.
