Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should be praised for his decision to install an absolute heavyweight in the role of special counsel.
President Trump however responded early Thursday tweeting "This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"
The FBI, Senate and House intelligence committees and are all conducting their own investigations into claims of collusion between Russian Federation and Mr Trump's 2016 campaign.
The Justice Department on Wednesday appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to lead the investigation. It immediately escalated the legal stakes - and the potential political damage - for a president who has tried to dismiss the matter as partisan witch hunt and a "hoax". "Mr. Rosenstein has done the right thing", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said on the Senate floor. Trump has long bristled at the notion that Russia played any role in his November election victory. In the Russian city of Sochi, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Mueller's appointment, calling it an "internal matter" for the United States.Democrats and Trump's fellow Republicans widely praised the appointment of a special counsel to take over the Russia probe.Rosenstein was due to brief US senators later on Thursday.
"I believe that's why we're having this investigation - to find out if in fact there was collusion".
Mueller was appointed by the Department of Justice as special counsel on Wednesday.
Mueller's broad mandate gives him not only oversight of the Russian Federation probe, but also over "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".
Mueller, a former federal prosecutor at the Justice Department, was confirmed as FBI director days before the September 11, 2001, attacks that would ultimately shape his tenure. Many had called for a special prosecutor since last week's firing of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey. He was so valued that President Barack Obama asked him to stay on two years longer than his 10-year term.
Lavrov says media reported that Trump told him "terrorists are capable of stuffing laptops, all kinds of electronic devices, with untraceable explosive materials", information he says the administration revealed with the laptop ban.
Rosenstein had faced criticism as the author of a memo that preceded Comey's firing.
"Naming a special counsel to investigate Russian interference in our 2016 election was absolutely necessary, and former FBI Director Mueller is a very strong choice to help restore confidence in the independence and integrity of the ongoing investigation", said Coons in a statement.
Afterward, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told reporters that "everything he said was that you need to treat this investigation as if it may be a criminal investigation".
"And he said that ever since, the President had been trying to be chummy in a fashion that Comey felt was created to absorb him into Trump's world - to make him part of the team".
Special congressional committee: One too many now?
Trump is leaving town Friday on his first foreign trip, and aides have been hopeful the journey will be a chance for the administration to get back on track after weeks of chaos and distractions.
The Wisconsin Republican says in a written statement that he has wanted investigations that "follow the facts wherever they lead". The top members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have invited former FBI Director James Comey to testify publicly.
