Senate Judiciary Committee requests Comey memos-and Trump's recordings of those conversations

House Oversight Committee chair Jason Chaffetz, a senior Republican, said the memo and related documents "raise questions as to whether the president attempted to influence or impede the FBI's investigation".

The meetings come more than a week after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

A Republican strategist close to the White House said Trump needed a strong trip to help put the past tumultuous 10 days behind him.

We are writing to request that the Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee launch an immediate joint investigation into whether President Donald Trump and his top officials are engaged in an ongoing conspiracy to obstruct the criminal, counter-intelligence, and oversight investigations now being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, and Congress into members of his presidential campaign and their contacts with Russian officials.

The memo reportedly states that Comey did not speak about the investigation but simply said, "I agree he is a good guy". "A number of critical elements of the case involved just Trump and Comey one-on-one; indeed, part of the damning evidence is that Trump dismissed the others from the room before asking Comey to drop the case".

Most GOP lawmakers tried on Wednesday to tamp down the controversy and head off new investigations of Russian meddling in the USA election and potential ties to Trump's campaign.

He also highlighted the "very, very strong recommendation" he got from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Next question", he said, speaking at a press conference with the Colombian president.

But Chaffetz indicated he hasn't been able to get in touch with Comey, who became such a national fixture when Trump fired that cable networks broadcast helicopter footage of his ride to the airport.

Ryan said Congress needs to get the facts, but "it is obvious there are some people out there who want to harm the president".

The conversation between Trump and Comey was reportedly recorded in a memo prepared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation director immediately following the meeting but was shared only with close associates and top Federal Bureau of Investigation officials.

We did see freshman Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., who has been tweeting up a storm, calling for a full investigation of Comey's firing and now the scandal reportedly involving Israeli intelligence we gave to Russian Federation.

The Comey memo's emergence had congressional Democrats suggesting that the president engaged in obstruction of justice, an impeachable offence.

Democrats were far less sparing in their criticism and repeated demands for a special prosecutor. "It was treated as a casual, if regrettable, conversation or comment by the president". Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) told reporters after emerging from the session. They're also asking whether Comey memorialized any other conversations during the Obama presidency or whether he only chose to take notes about Trump.
