A subpoena has been issued demanding documents from Donald Trump's former national security adviser relating to Russia's alleged interference in the USA election.

Committee chairman Republican Richard Burr had previously warned he would issue subpoenas for those who did not cooperate with the investigation. But the chairman began signaling this week that if Trump surrogates did not turn over requested materials to the committee by Tuesday - a deadline that some missed - he and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., might begin issuing subpoenas.

Flynn is part of a larger investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Flynn is also under investigation for business dealings he had with clients tied to foreign governments.

The Senate Intelligence Committee said it made the formal demand after Flynn rejected its request two weeks ago for information on his contacts with Russian officials and businessmen.

"Everything has been voluntary up to this point, and we've interviewed a lot of people, and I want to continue to do it in a voluntary fashion", Burr said earlier on Wednesday.

With scheduling in calendars three days behind, even those bills lawmakers expected to hear may never make it to the House floor. Principals and superintendents who fail to report such crimes could face a state jail felony and a fine of up to $10,000.

Trump Says Wants to Move Quickly to Nominate New FBI Director
The move comes as the agency is investigating whether Trump's campaign was connected to Russian meddling in the election. Adam Lee, special agent in charge of the FBI's Richmond, Virginia, office, was also interviewing Saturday afternoon.

The subpoena was announced a day after Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey, who had been leading the bureau's investigation of Russian Federation and the election.

Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, emerged in 2015 as a strident critic of the Obama administration, which fired him.

Citing people familiar with the matter, CNN said the subpoenas were issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Alexandria, Virginia.

Other congressional committees and the Pentagon's inspector general are also separately examining whether Flynn was fully forthcoming about his foreign contacts and earnings from organizations linked to the governments of Russian Federation and Turkey.

Flynn's lawyer, Robert Kelner, has said that Flynn was not hiding anything, noting that he briefed the DIA on his trip to Russian Federation.

Flynn's company, Flynn Intel Group, told the Justice Department in March that the two $40,000 payments were consulting fees for unspecified work. The difference matters because Flynn's foreign business relationships and the veracity of his disclosures are under scrutiny by congressional, military and intelligence inquiries.
