Players history-maker Kim out of Byron Nelson

The previous youngest victor was Adam Scott who won the 2003 tournament aged 23. He was the only player who didn't commit a bogey in the final round.

He had already notched a maiden United States tour win at last year's Wyndham Championship.

Kim will have to do the same unless he can win a major in the next few years.

"I still can't believe I'm the champion and I'm the youngest champion", Kim said.

Ian Poulter is looking forward to getting back to the revamped Wentworth when he tees it up in next week's BMW PGA Championship.

Kim, a 21-year-old South Korean, captured his second PGA Tour victory Sunday, becoming the youngest victor in Players Championship history. Not Kim. Once he gained an upper hand on the field, the seventh global Players champion in the last 10 years shut the door for good.

"I wasn't nervous at all because I was leading", he said.

The International team is based on the world ranking, and Kim moved up to No. 7. He's the second-highest-ranked Asian player after Hideki Matsuyama, No. 3 from Japan. Not only did Ian Poulter, Louis Oosthuizen, Lucas Glover or third round co-leaders Kyle Stanley and J.B. Holmes never catch Kim, all of them except Poulter struggled to stay within reasonable striking distance.

He shot a final round of 69.

Kim didn't make things easy for himself, hitting only eight greens in regulation. This victory comes with perks beyond the $1.89 million first prize.

Kim's compatriot Bae Sang-moon, another two-time victor on the PGA Tour, lost a legal battle to defer his military service in 2015. This win gets him a five-year exemption on the tour and a three-year exemption to the Masters.

Less than a month ago Poulter thought he had lost his full playing status on the PGA Tour after failing to earn enough points in a designated number of tournaments this season after returning from a foot injury that curtailed his 2016 campaign.

Kim became the second South Korean to win the event after KJ Choi in 2011 and he said he hoped his victory would help inspire his countrymen to raise their game. "And I'm very glad I could practice with him".

Choi even gave the youngster some advice before the round. "That's why I could do well".

The Players might be over but the unofficial "fifth Major" brought all the excitement and drama you'd expect from TPC Sawgrass. Kim's start this week was his 61st.

"I've been striking the ball really well for about two or three weeks", Kim said.

Kim recently changed his putting grip.

But he will soon be set for time out of the game with South Korea requiring all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 35 to complete at least 21 months in the military as a deterrent to North Korean aggression. It just shows you how good a player he is and how cool and calm he is.
