Of the 48 affected NHS England hospitals, six remain unoperational

No one has claimed responsibility for the cyber attack, which by Saturday had begun to subside after an unidentified British researcher who tweets at @MalwareTechBlog reportedly activated a "kill switch", a code built into the ransomware that provided a way of stopping the attack.

In Spain, the attacks did not disrupt the provision of services or networks operations of the victims, the government said in a statement.

Across the USA federal government, about 90 per cent of all spending on cyber programs is dedicated to offensive efforts, including penetrating the computer systems of adversaries, listening to communications and developing the means to disable or degrade infrastructure, senior intelligence officials told Reuters in March.

Some experts said the threat had receded for now, in part because a British-based researcher, who declined to give his name, registered a domain that he noticed the malware was trying to connect to, and so limited the worm's spread.

The NSA did not respond to a request for comment.

The attacks involved ransomware - software which invades computer systems and takes control of files.

National Health Service: At least sixteen NHS organizations have been hit, according to NHS Digital.

The attack held hospitals and other entities hostage by freezing computers, encrypting data and demanding money through online bitcoin payments.

WHO Confirms New Ebola Case in Democratic Republic of Congo
The country's health ministry was reported to have notified the world health body after laboratory tests confirmed it. It was the only epidemic of Ebola - usually, outbreaks are smaller and affect at the most a few hundred people.

In Germany, where rail operator Deutsche Bahn's passenger information screens were scrambled and some video surveillance cameras went dark, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that while the attack was particularly serious, it was also preventable.

Only a small number of US-headquartered organisations were hit because the hackers appear to have begun the campaign by targeting organisations in Europe, said Vikram Thakur, research manager with security software maker Symantec. "At this stage, we do not have any evidence that patient data has been accessed".

The First Minister and Ms Robison have been updated on the situation and Justice Secretary Michael Matheson has participated in the UK Government COBR meeting chaired by the Home Secretary this afternoon.

Theresa May said the UK Government is not aware of any evidence that patient records have been compromised.

"Both staff and patients were frankly pretty appalled that somebody, whoever they are, for commercial gain or otherwise, would attack a healthcare organisation", he said.

Which Scottish NHS organisations were affected by the ransomware attack? . Some 97% of NHS trusts are now "working as normal" and there is nothing to indicate that patient data was affected, the BBC reports. We are working closely with them and are being guided by their expert knowledge in this field.

According to cyber analysis, the Wanna Decryptor malware used in the attack on the NHS and Telefonica "exploits a similar vulnerability" to an NSA-developed tool known as EXTERNALBLUE, researcher Marco Cova said. It was among a large number of hacking tools and other files that a group known as the Shadow Brokers released on the internet. Download it today and continue to enjoy STV News wherever you are.
