Thousands of patients across England and Scotland are stuck in limbo after A&E wards, GP surgeries and other vital services across the NHS were infected with a virus based on hacking tools developed by United States cyber-warfare agents.

Hospitals and doctors' surgeries in parts of England were forced to turn away patients and cancel appointments.

French vehicle maker Renault has also confirmed it was hit in the cyber assault that has infected tens of thousands of computers in nearly 100 countries.

"Following a suspected national cyber attack we are taking all precautionary measures possible to protect our local NHS systems and services", NHS Merseyside said on Twitter.

The attacks are being blamed on a piece of malware called WCry, WannaCry or Wana Decryptor, alleged to have been stolen from the National Security Agency, as the Bleeping Computer site reports. In China, official Xinhua news agency said some secondary schools and universities had been affected. It was reportedly distributed by the Shadow Brokers, which claimed to have hacked an NSA-linked team of hackers last August.

Doctors warned that the infiltration - said to be the largest cyber-attack in NHS history - could cost lives.

IT systems and telephone networks appear to have been targeted, with some hospitals now operating on an emergency-only basis.

NHS Digital has confirmed it is working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre "to support affected organisations and ensure patient safety is protected". In a statement released around 11:30 a.m. ET, Friday, the system's digital office said, "This attack was not specifically targeted at the NHS and is affecting organizations from across a range of sectors". The interior ministry said about 1,000 computers had been infected but it had localized the virus.

"Seeing a large telco like Telefonica get hit is going to get everybody anxious", said Chris Wysopal, chief technology officer with cyber security firm Veracode.

"This incident highlights the risk to data security within the modern health service and reinforces the need for cyber security to be at the heart of government planning", Labour's health spokesman Jonathan Ashworth said.
