  • Sharapova to play Wimbledon qualification rounds

Sharapova could have secured a place in the Wimbledon main draw by right had she reached the semi-finals at the Italian Open in Rome, but she withdrew injured during a second round match against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Sharapova will have to win three matches to earn one of the 12 qualifying berths for women in Wimbledon's 128-player main draw.

The five time Grand Slam champion was this week denied free entry into the main draw of the French Open following her 15 month drugs ban.

"A few months ago, I received a wild card offer from Birmingham, one of my most memorable tournaments as a young player".

Maria Sharapova announced Friday that she would not request one of the eight wild-card invitations to Wimbledon and instead will attempt to qualify her way into the Grand Slam event. The five-time Grand Slam victor had plummeted to 211.

Since the end of her ban, Sharapova has used wild-card entries to play three events on the WTA Tour to improve her world ranking to the point at which she can automatically enter anywhere again.

Melodium was only banned at the beginning of 2016 but Sharapova said she had been taking it for over 10 years as she was magnesium deficient and had recorded several irregular electrocardiography (EKG) tests.

Despite the Lawn Tennis Association welcoming her into the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, it was not a foregone conclusion that Sharapova would be afforded such treatment by Wimbledon's tennis sub-committee.

The Roehampton qualifying tournament is ticketed for the first time this year and Sharapova will have to win three matches if she is to reach the main draw. Qualifying for Wimbledon will begin June 26.

It meant she needed a favor from the French Tennis Federation (FFT) but in an unexpected development, especially as the French Open is already without pregnant Serena Williams and resting Roger Federer, it took a moral stand that will please some of her rivals but could hit the tournament's ratings.

Her ban was later reduced to 15-months following a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Russian also allayed fears about a thigh injury that saw her retire from this week's Rome Masters.
