Kim Si-woo makes history at The Players Championship

Kim was almost flawless Sunday on the TPC Sawgrass, closing with a 3-under 69 with no bogeys on his card for a three-shot victory in golf's biggest tournament this side of the major championships.

South Korean Kim Si-woo has rallied to capture The Players Championship, one of the biggest tournaments on the PGA Tour.

He was the only player to seriously challenge Si Woo Kim on the back nine Sunday at the TPC Sawgrass, and his incredible bogey save from the woods on the 18th hole gave him a 1-under 71 and a tie for second with Louis Oosthuizen. Giving the 21-year-old his second PGA Tour victory and a hefty prize of $1.89 million.

Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain was never going to win, but it will be hard to forget how he finished.

The South Korean started the final round two strokes adrift of the lead held by American pair Kyle Stanley and J.B Holmes.

Just over four years ago, Kim came over to America to play the final version of PGA Tour's qualifying school.

The smart money, if an worldwide player overtook American co-leaders J.B. Holmes and Kyle Stanley, was on veterans such as Poulter, Oosthuizen, Adam Scott (the previous youngest victor, at 23 in 2004) or Masters champion Sergio Garcia.

After breaking Adam Scott's record by becoming the youngest victor of the Players Championship, Si Woo Kim isn't worrying just yet about interrupting his career for compulsory military service in his homeland.

Sharapova vows to 'rise up again' after French Open snub
She's qualified for the Wimbledon qualifying rounds but can still be handed a wild card when the decision is made on June 20. Regardless of the rhetoric, the fact is, the 2-time champion Sharapova will not be at the French Open this year.

Ian Poulter, who finished second, had some very nice things to say about the 2017 champion.

Kim smashed Scott's record as youngest Players Championship victor, which the Queenslander set in 2004 aged 23 years, 8 months and 12 days.

Kim's first win on the PGA Tour came at the 2016 Wyndham Championship.

"I never expected to win and I wasn't playing that well at the beginning of the year".

Only last month, he thought he has lost his PGA Tour card only for a miscalculation in his earnings due to a medical dispensation.

"I really wish I could be a good example of the Korean men's player", Kim said. He's now using the claw grip - the left hand in a normal position and the right hand turned upside down with the palm facing the ground as if the player were holding a pencil - after watching Sergio Garcia win the Masters with it last month. Cabrera Bello made the first albatross 2 on the par-5 16th with an 8-iron that caromed off the side of a bunker, bounced toward the hole and struck the pin before it disappeared.

Kim became just the second Asian victor of the Players after his idol South Korean K.J. Choi triumphed in 2011.

World number two Rory McIlroy will decide early next week whether he will play at Wentworth.
