Israel a step closer to becoming a "Jewish state"

14 Mai, 2017, 05:42 | Author: Claudine Rigal

"The State of Israel, which demands of its enemies to recognize it as the nation-state of the Jewish people and justifiably asks its supporters in the world to back this demand, needs to be able to declare in its highest legislative level that it proudly maintains this identity".

Israeli ministers have approved a controversial bill that will downgrade Arabic as an official language and define the country as the "national home of the Jewish people".

Netanyahu praised the bill in a meeting with his Likud party and voiced support for it, saying his government would put it to a vote and usher it into law during the Knesset's summer session.

The president said he was keen to reunite the Palestinian people and land by ending the division, as well as enable the national consensus government to be in charge of all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip.

The Israel Democracy Institute described the new bill as "violating the sensitive balance between the Jewish and democratic liners". "Events of recent months prove that this is a battle for the Israel's image and national identity".

One has to scratch one's head and question what is wrong with Israel today that compels lawmakers to pass a bill that will permit passing a law declaring Israel the Jewish state after 69 years of independence.

New Hamas chief pledges support to hunger-striking prisoners
An influential military figure, he represents for some the hardest line within the Islamist movement. Israeli army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner posted on his official Twitter site.

He added that Germany will continue its efforts to build the Palestinian state and improve the living condition of the Palestinian people.

They have accused him of pandering to right-wingers, and past versions of the legislation failed to make it through parliament.

The latest version reached out to liberals by including the phrase "Jewish and democratic" and omitting a previously included affirmation of the importance of settlement throughout Israel's borders.

Arab legislator Ayman Odeh responded to the cabinet decision on Twitter: 'The nation-state law is tyranny by the majority and "legally" turns us into second-class citizens'.

Critics said that the bill is discriminatory to Israel's Arab and other minority populations. "Discrimination has received a legal stamp. The danger in this law in that is establishes two classes of citizen - Jewish and Arab", he said.
