NHS computer systems are returning to normal after the ransomware cyber attack, health secretary Shona Robison has said.

The ransomware attack struck British National Health Service organisations, along with computer networks of companies and municipalities in dozens of other countries.

Smith also urged Windows users to protect themselves against increasingly sophisticated cyber criminals by updating their systems, suggesting that "this attack demonstrates the degree to which cybersecurity has become a shared responsibility between tech companies and customers".

"I think we may have got away with it".

He also poured fuel on a long-running debate over how government intelligence services should balance their desires to keep software flaws secret - in order to conduct espionage and cyber warfare - against sharing those flaws with technology companies to better secure the Internet.

Chinese government bodies from transport, social security, industry watchdogs and immigration said they had suspended services ranging from processing applications to traffic crime enforcement.

"This was general goal malware and not a targeted virus".

Hospitals have stopped diverting patients following last week's cyber attack which crippled many NHS Trusts' IT systems. "If you have an attachment you're not familiar with, don't open it".

Britain's NHS is the world's fifth-largest employer after the USA and Chinese militaries, Wal-Mart Stores and McDonald's. "It was clear (that) warnings were given to hospital trusts".
