  • President Donald Trump shares a word with German

Leaders from the world's major industrialized nations began talks on Friday at a G7 summit in Sicily which is expected to expose deep divisions with U.S. President Donald Trump over trade and climate change.

He reportedly said it a day earlier in Brussels while meeting with European Union leaders.

Diplomats worked late into the night to try to agree the wording with the United States on global trade.

White House economic adviser Gary Cohn predicted "robust" discussions on trade and climate.

More than half a million have landed in Italy since 2014, with 1,400 brought ashore by rescuers on Friday alone.

While leaders at the G7 summit concurred on Internet terrorism, they did not come to an agreement on climate change - because Trump, who's already threatened to remove the United States from the landmark 2015 Paris climate change accord, remains uncertain of his stance on the matter.

However, the G7 leaders said there was broad agreement on an array of fraught foreign policy questions, including on Syria, Libya and North Korea. Cohn and other administration officials have said Trump will wait until after the summit to decide.

"This is the first real opportunity that the global community has to force the American administration to begin to show its hand, particularly on environment policy", said Tristen Naylor, a lecturer on development at the University of Oxford and deputy director of the G20 Research Group.

According to German media reports, Trump also condemned Germany for "very bad" trade policies in a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, signalling he might take steps to limit sales of German cars in the United States.

For Trump, who touched down at a United States military airbase near the summit venue late on Thursday, the talks will be the final leg of his first presidential foray overseas.

The leaders are also due to discuss security cooperation following the May 22 bombing at a concert in Manchester that killed 22 people and was allegedly carried out by a young Islamist militant of Libyan descent who grew up in Britain. At the last G7 summit in Japan it totaled 32 pages.

There was also continued friction over global trade, with Trump, who got elected promising to put America first, blaming multilateral commerce deals for USA trade deficits and demanding what he terms a "level playing field".
