Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry into Russian Federation links 'hurts USA terribly'

Until this week, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who took over direction of the probe after his boss Jeff Sessions recused himself, had resisted calls to bring in an outside investigator. Mr. Sessions did so because of his own contacts with the Russian ambassador to the USA while he was advising the Trump campaign.
Rosenstein met with all US senators in one of the most protected rooms on Capitol Hill, "the SCIF", or a sensitive compartmented information facility.
"Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein made clear that the primary mission of the Special Counsel, who will now lead the (Justice) investigation, is to determine whether or not there were any violations of criminal law", Collins said.
Robert Mueller has been appointed as the special prosecutor to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 election. Now Mueller will have almost unfettered access to witnesses and information, and the ability to bring criminal charges.
He doesn't have carte blanche when it comes to requesting resources, but it's close.
"One of the side benefits of this is that now Congress has been pretty much sidelined, not completely but pretty much, and we can go back to dealing with legislative matters that affect the American people".
President Trump's initial reaction to the special counsel appointment was reportedly restrained.
"With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel appointed!" But, in a Twitter rampage the day after, Mr. Trump said it was the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history. That's not to say that Democrats, their leftist base and Trump haters in the mainstream media won't continue to raise the Watergate and impeachment banners, and try to put political pressure on Mr. Mueller to come out with findings that support their pre-determined verdict of guilty. "I now have significantly greater confidence that the investigation will follow the facts wherever they lead". The appointment was like a sucker punch for President Donald Trump as he had no idea about it. Hours after the appointment, he tweeted that it was a witch hunt. "Mr. Mueller will be independent". The operative statute is Section 1503 of Title 18, United States Code.

Any collusion between Trump campaign officials and the forces of Russia's Vladimir Putin must be aggressively pursued, and if evidence is found, aggressively prosecuted. That would require proof of the president's specific wrongful intent to "secure an unlawful benefit for oneself or another", according to Professor Turley. "But the takeaway I had is that everything he said is that you need to treat this investigation as if it may be a criminal investigation". However, his simply asking for leniency, without more, on behalf of someone he likes would not do it.
Earlier on Thursday, Trump had called the naming of Mueller as special prosecutor to head the investigation into his campaign's Russian Federation links a "witch hunt".
Then Trump admitted he had been considering firing Comey for months.
By several senators' accounts, he contradicted Trump's statements that Rosenstein's written criticism of FBI Director James Comey had been a factor in Comey's recent firing by the president. He added, "there has been no effort to impede our investigation to date".
Rosenstein's 2:30 p.m. briefing with the Senate was scheduled before he announced late Wednesday that he was appointing Robert Mueller, a former prosecutor who served as FBI director from 2001 to 2013, to take over the Russian Federation investigation as special counsel. Trump fired Comey on May 9.
The timeline was further muddled Thursday when Democrats emerged from a closed-door meeting with Rosenstein saying he knew Comey would be removed prior to writing the memo, even as Trump insisted again that he had gotten a "very, very strong recommendation" from Rosenstein. "That doesn't stop us from doing our jobs to work on people's problems". "It's not happened in my experience".
"He appointed Mueller because he was cognizant enough to understand whether or not he thought he could be fair in the investigation was irrelevant", said Steven Silverman, a Baltimore attorney who has known Rosenstein for years. Don't expect the left and their friends in the mainstream media to act reasonably, however. He will coordinate with the FBI as he sees fit, while the congressional committees undertaking their own oversight investigations of alleged Russian interference in last year's presidential campaign can proceed as well.

Cornyn said Rosenstein asked for "a single point of contact so that we can coordinate and facilitate this". Trump cited displeasure with the FBI's Russian Federation probe as a factor in dismissing Comey.
