  • Elections BC accepts recounts for two ridings, rejects four other requests

Christy Clark's Liberals are one seat shy of a majority government with 43 seats based on election night tallies, while John Horgan's New Democrats have 41 and Andrew Weaver's Greens hold three.

Elections BC says recounts are accepted when the difference between the top two candidates is 100 votes or fewer or votes were not correctly accepted, ballots were not correctly rejected or a ballot account does not accurately record the number of votes for a candidate.

This is also when about 176,000 absentee votes will be counted, which could also affect the final result.

In Courtenay-Comox, the difference between the top two candidates is only nine votes, with the NDP's Ronna-Rae Leonard in front of Liberal Jim Benninger.

"In a race that close, with [about] 2,000 ballots yet to count, this is worth looking close", said Sanford.

The final count will take place between May 22 and 24 and includes votes cast by voters outside of their electoral district, in a district electoral office or by mail.

BC NDP candidate Aman Singh requested a recount in the Richmond-Queensborough riding where he lost to BC Liberal candidate Jas Johal.

Crushing loss for Labour points to big Tory majority in Commons
In Derbyshire, the Tories took 19 seats from Labour as the county passed directly from one party's hands to the other. Nationalist party Plaid Cymru gained 33 seats for a total of 202 with control of one council.

In Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, where the BC Liberal candidate, Joan Issacs won by 268 votes over BC NDP candidate Jodie Wickens, who requested the recount, was denied.

Elections BC has rejected four of the six requests for recounts in ridings where the outcome in the provincial election was determined by less than 600 votes.

Elections BC has a wide range of guidelines around recounts.

The party had filed formal requests for the ridings of Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, Vancouver-False Creek, and Richmond-Queensborough. Those requests must be made within six days of the announcement of the final results.

Staff at Elections BC could not be reached on Saturday for more information, but a statement issued by officials said Ryan's request was approved because the number of votes recorded in the ballot account was 403, but there were only 399 votes on the tally sheet.

Another riding with close results was Maple Ridge-Mission, where Liberal Marc Dalton asked for a recount.
