  • Eddie Alvarez Dustin Poirier

Despite offering one of the very best second rounds you'll ever see, Dustin Poirier's lightweight battle with Eddie Alvarez earlier tonight (Sat., May 13, 2017) at UFC 211 from inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, ended with an unfortunate result. Poirier showcased his ability and defiance against a top-ranked lightweight, while the former UFC champion Alvarez refused to lose back-to-back fights for the first time in his storied career.

After doing what she needed to do to earn a clear unanimous decision win over Jessica Aguilar, Cortney Casey repeatedly apologized to the Dallas crowd. "Dustin did a real good job keeping me at range and I was just trying to find my way through the fight, trying to do anything I could to get back in the fight".

Here is how the fight unfolded, round-by-round, including FanSided's scoring of the fight.

Alvarez turned the tables and landed his own hard shots on Poirier before securing a takedown along the cage. Threatening with a body kick, Poirier connected but wound up eating a left hook to the template.

The two fighters embraced after the fight with Alvarez raising the hand of Poirier.

Cleveland Cavaliers backup center Walter Tavares breaks hand during practice
Tavares suffered a fractured right hand, which was confirmed through X-rays and a CT scan Friday and will be out indefinitely. The team announced Tavares' injury Saturday after practice. "I didn't know that", Lue said.

Poirier appeared close to finishing the fight in the second round.

Picking right where he left off, Alvarez exploded forward with punches before shooting in for a takedown against the fence. Eddie tried to work for a guillotine choke but Dustin was able to escape the hold. Poirier steps in and lands a jab.

In the second round, Poirier rocked Alvarez with a counter left hand. He followed that up with a leg kick.

After Poirier almost put Alvarez out on his feet with devastating combinations in Round 2, Alvarez defied natural law and responded with his own fearsome offensive onslaught. Alvarez into the clinch against the cage and Poirier was looking for a submission there, but lets it go.

Following the third knee, referee Herb Dean stopped the fight and called the doctor into the Octagon to check on Poirier. There's a long wait and eventually Poirier confirms he's unable to continue due to having blurred vision. But instead of disqualifying Alvarez, Dean ruled the illegal knees unintentional, resulting in a odd no-contest ending to the bout, despite the fact that it was clearly stopped due to obviously illegal blows.
