Donald Trump to withdraw U.S. from Paris Agreement on climate change

The report of the apparent decision comes hours after the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the U.S. to remain within the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit global warming to as close to 1.5 degrees Celsius as possible.

Trump said he would decide this week whether or not he will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, which the Obama administration joined in 2016 along with 146 other countries.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for sustained action to meet the global challenge and to ensure a peaceful and sustainable future for all, urging world to rally behind Paris accord.

"Last year, solar power grew 50 percent, with China and the United States in the lead", he said.

"Some may seek to portray the response to climate change as a fundamental threat to the economy", Guterres said. He said he will take a decision on the Paris climate agreement this week.

In order to do that, countries pledge to reduce their carbon emissions.

Three billion tonnes of additional carbon dioxide could be released into the air every year, melting the ice sheets faster, further raising sea levels and leading to extreme weather, the report added. It is absolutely essential that the world implements the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Supporters of the climate pact are concerned that a USA exit could lead other nations to weaken their commitments or also withdraw, softening an accord that scientists have said is critical to avoiding the worst impacts of climate change.
