The Liberal Democrats have promised that if elected they would scrap the "Orwellian nightmare" of mass snooping powers.

Labour also hinted at bringing an end to the pay cap in their leaked manifesto last week.

"It is pre-internet equivalent of hiring a private investigator to follow every person in the United Kingdom and record their movements, on the grounds that it may be useful at some point in the next year", a Lib Dem statement read.

Their manifesto will include proposals to roll back state surveillance powers by ending the indiscriminate bulk collection of communications data and the collection of internet connection records.

Asked by an RCN delegate why people should believe the Lib Dems after the party broke its pledge on tuition fees, Mr Farron, who rebelled on the issue, said: "The problem is that if you are living in a society, and we are, where people assume that politicians are scumbags who don't tell the truth, don't confirm the suspicion".

NHS workers are being treated "like dirt" by the Government, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron is claiming.

"The security services need to be able to keep people safe, but these powers are straight out of an Orwellian nightmare".

"For the Liberal Democrats, protecting our environment and tackling climate change is a priority".

The draft technical capability paper would require all communications firms to provide real-time access to security services and the police of the full content of anyone's web browsing with one working day's notice.

Under the plans, companies would be legally required to introduce a backdoor to their systems so authorities can read all correspondence if required.

The Conservatives have on numerous occasions said they would not ban or undermine encryption. "The current legal position in respect of encryption will be repeated in the legislation of the bill".
