Cyber attack updates: Microsoft issues ransomware warning as NHS threatened

16 Mai, 2017, 00:00 | Author: Claudine Rigal

According to Microsoft, the cyber attack that has hit as many as 200,000 victims in over 150 countries should be treated by governments around the world as a "wake-up call". Cyber Peace Foundation (CPF), a Ranchi-based NGO that runs a research project monitoring cyber attacks, saw a 56-fold increase in breach attempts at sensors installed across eight states in the country. Companies including Hitachi and Nissan Motor Co. reported problems but said they said had not seriously affected their business operations.

Moran's colleague Leonard McAuliffe, director of PwC's cyber practice, said that IT teams have a lot of work on their hands.

"This is an emerging pattern in 2017", Smith says in a Microsoft company blog post. This is one reason we called in February for a new "Digital Geneva Convention" to govern these issues, including a new requirement for governments to report vulnerabilities to vendors, rather than stockpile, sell, or exploit them.

"An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the U.S. military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen", Smith wrote. "We need the tech sector, customers, and governments to work together to protect against cybersecurity attacks".

But global fears eased on Monday as the number of incidents reported levelled off.

The cross-border police agency Europol said the situation was now "stable", defusing concerns that attacks that struck computers in British hospital wards, European auto factories and Russian banks would spread further at the start of the working week.

Universities and other educational institutions in China were among the hardest hit, possibly because schools tend to have old computers and be slow to update operating systems and security, said Fang Xingdong, founder of ChinaLabs, an internet strategy think tank.

Microsoft rolled out over the weekend a patch for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 8, which are operating systems for which it no longer provides mainstream support.

The latest "provocation" should serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against the North, it said. The U.S. military said the type of missile fired on May 14 was "not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile".

USA package delivery giant FedEx, European auto factories, Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, Britain's health service and Germany's Deutsche Bahn rail network were among those hit.

Ms Sturgeon said she was not aware of any ransoms being paid over the cyber attack but said that will be part of the police investigation.

"We've never seen anything like this", he said.

A pop-up window will appear on an infected computer's screen, showing instructions how to pay a $300 ransom - the amount will double in three days - in bitcoin, otherwise the data will be wiped out.

Experts and governments alike warn against ceding to the demands and Wainwright said few victims so far had been paying up. "Right now, just about every IT department has been working all weekend rolling this out", said Dan Wire, spokesman at Fireeye Security. While a United Kingdom security researcher managed to stop the spread of the virus, hackers have issued new versions that cybersecurity organizations are trying to counter and stamp out.

"Once a machine is infected it will scan the entire internal network and infect other vulnerable machines". If the update had been applied across the NHS, it would have stopped or at least curtailed the spread of the attack.

Among those affected by the virus was Nissan, but the vehicle manufacturer said there had been no major impact.

Experts say the spread of the virus had been stymied by a security researcher in the United Kingdom hackers have issued new versions of the virus that cyber security organizations are actively trying to counter and stamp out. "That said, organisations can better set themselves up to deal with ransomware attack by consistently backing up critical files, educating employees on proper cybersecurity hygiene, and patching vulnerabilities in a timely manner".
