A chieftain of Progressives People's Alliance (PPA), in Enugu State, Mr Godwin Ezeemo, has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari, Red Cross and Non-Governmental Agencies for the release of 82 Chibok Girls.

Boko Haram fighters stormed the Government Girls Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok on the evening of April 14, 2014 and kidnapped 276 teenaged girls who were preparing to sit high school exams.

"The location of the girls kept changing since yesterday, when the operation to rescue them commenced", said the official.

The president later travelled to London to attend to his health after meeting the girls.

President Buhari expressed delight over the release of the girls and reassured Nigerians, especially relatives and friends, of the determination of his administration to secure freedom for the remaining girls and other Nigerians still under the insurgents captivity.

The party hailed the girls for their bravery "having survived the very harrowing experiences in the past three years, and their parents and families who have endured the nervy and traumatic wait for their children".

The ICRC, which along with the Swiss government has mediated months of negotiations between Nigeria's government and Boko Haram, tweeted what might be the first public image of the freed schoolgirls on Sunday.

Boko Haram, which a year ago pledged loyalty to Islamic State, has kidnapped hundreds of men, women and children in its campaign to carve out a medieval Islamist caliphate.

Twenty-one girls were released in October past year after negotiations between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government brokered by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Swiss government.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the latest release and urged the worldwide community to support Nigeria's government to work toward getting all Boko Haram victims home.

Before Saturday's release, 195 of the girls had been captive.

It is feared others were strapped with explosives and sent on missions as suicide bombers.

Enoch Mark, a Christian pastor whose two daughters were among those kidnapped, said he was told of the release by the Bring Back Our Girls pressure group and an official in Maiduguri.
