  • Gen Bajwa for arresting extremist tendencies

Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa has stated that we as a nation, have fought the menace of terrorism most valiantly, giving unparalleled sacrifices.

Addressing the participants of a seminar, "Role of youth in rejecting extremism" as a chief guest here Thursday, General Bajwa said, "Our Armed forces have set an example for the whole world in cleansing these barbarians from their potholes. In fact, security has now achieved conditions to help development take off", he said.

"From that perspective", he added, "We must admit that Pakistani youth is being exploited due to the poor governance [of the country] and lack of justice in society".

Gen Bajwa's statement also draws a parallel to the statement of Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb, who a few days ago, warned against the misuse of social media.

He vowed that extremism will also be defeated as terrorism was defeated in Pakistan.

"Please remember, while the Army fights terrorists, terrorism and extremism is fought by law enforcing agencies and society", he said. Referring to the rising extremism in India, the army chief said it has given in to extremism and hate has been mainstreamed there.

He said the Hindutva extremism of the RSS, deprivation of Palestinians, the burning and desecration of mosques or gurdwaras in western capitals, the rise of hyper-nationalists and the monster of racism, are all manifestations of extremism. "Today there are no safe havens for any miscreants in Pakistan". "Let me say that they are waging the biggest and most sustained "Hybrid War" against us from multiple directions and using multiple ways", he said.

He said Pakistan was cognizant of these threats and was actively countering them with the support of the entire nation.

"Our homes, educational institutions and media houses are first in the line of defence against extremism in the society", Gen Bajwa said.

"We have defeated terrorism together and we will go after extremism too and root it with our values, mental faculties and physical energies", Gen Bajwa said. Today's event was to find collective solutions against extremism which affects everyone, including the young people, he said.

He pointed out that one of operation Raddul Fassad's strands was to eliminate extremism from our society.

"We are being targeted by not only terrorists but also spin masters of multiple hostile agencies, trying to subvert our minds, particularly that of our youth", he said. "The process involves identification of threat and response measures", he said.
