  • Marches Being Planned To Protest Trump Science Policies

Some of them will take part in the grand march in Washington, D.C. Others will march in cities across the country.

St. Petersburg will be the site of one of the marches for science scheduled for Earth Day (April 22).

U.S. President Donald Trump has made several sweeping moves that put the future of science in jeopardy, according to several members of the movement.

Activists and scientists are expected to descend on the nation's capital Saturday to rally for environmental causes and government policies rooted in scientific research as part of the Earth Day and March for Science rallies. The march, as much as it being a celebratory event, is also a protest at the lack of political support for scientific progression.

Rutgers is right to join in with the March for Science in its fight to advocate for the scientific world. The week of action, dubbed "From Truth to Justice: Earth Day to May Day 2017", will see over 50 events, including: climate education opportunities and the launch of visionary legislation, youth speak-outs and convergences, direct actions, and more. You can find out if people are marching near you HERE. The demonstration comes a week after the Tax March and a week before the People's Climate March. Michael Mann addresses the chilly atmosphere for scientists now in Washington, DC, and talks about the dire situation the world finds itself on as President Donald Trump rolls back initiatives meant to combat climate change.

According to some of the worldwide organisers, Earth Day Network, American Geophysical Union, National Science Teachers Association and Carnegie Science, "defending science, innovation and discovery is an absolute must in every community throughout the world".

These cuts would effectively wipe out a generation of brilliant young scientists just starting their careers in academia, while dissuading others from entering the field altogether. Organizing their own protest is a significant departure from form for the scientific community, which prizes neutrality and objectivity as core principles of the scientific method.

The protests are often fueled by those with left-leaning political views who were surprised by Trump's victory but have not been quelled by his policies and actions since taking office. "This is a standard political march with a climate label", he states. For some researchers, participating in the march to support science and the future of their disciplines is a must. But it would not be unreasonable for a rural blue-collar worker, watching the marches from afar, to perceive them as yet another attack from the condescending elite. Scientists should be saying: "here are questions we should answer and here is what we need to answer them". Souza said the march aims to show "in the most public way possible" precisely how many people support science, not just in the US, but also across the world. As of Wednesday, more than 75,000 people on Facebook have said they planned to attend or were interested in attending Saturday's event in Boston.

"Whether we like it or not, we're living in an era where science is under attack and science funding is under attack", said Richard Zurawski, a scientist and HRM councillor.
