When Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the Korean demilitarized zone on Monday, he said that the United States sought to solve the North Korean crisis "through peaceable means and negotiations", after increasing pressure on the Pyongyang regime.

KORUS, which was signed five years ago, provides duty-free access for 95 percent of consumer and industrial goods.

Military force against North Korea has always been a hard proposition. "Our businesses continue to face too many barriers to entry, which tilts the playing field against American workers and American growth", he told local business leaders.

Pence repeated the phrase in South Korea, the first stop on his tour, and again during his speech aboard the Ronald Reagan.

He also alluded to tensions in the South China Sea, where China is embroiled in territorial rows with several South-east Asian countries, saying the U.S. will stoutly defend the freedom of navigation through the waterway.

In South Korea and Japan, Pence played down protectionist declarations of "America first" and reaffirmed United States treaty commitments to the security of the two countries as tensions rise over Pyongyang's nuclear program.

He said the Trump administration would work with ASEAN on security issues, trade and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.

However, billionaire investor Carl Icahn, Freeport's third-biggest shareholder and special adviser to US President Donald Trump, has described Jakarta's tactics over the mining contract as "disingenuous and insulting", according to the New York Times.

Vice President Mike Pence was in Tokyo on Tuesday, calling for "stronger and more balanced bilateral trade relationships" with countries like Japan and South Korea.

Pence said at a joint news conference with Jokowi that the US wants to strengthen its strategic partnership with Indonesia.

Indonesia, where most practice a moderate form of Islam, has always been held up as an example of a successful Muslim democracy where followers of the faith live largely peacefully alongside religious minorities.

Widodo's approach to foreign policy has been led more by economic interests than geopolitical considerations: he has pursued increased trade and investment from China, but keeps a diplomatic distance from Beijing and established a strategic partnership with Washington under former President Barack Obama.

"The policy that President Trump has articulated is to marshal the support of our allies in the region, here in Japan and South Korea, nations around the world, and China, who have taken the position now for decades of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula", Pence said.

Abe said Japan hoped for peaceful dialogue with Pyongyang, "but at the same time, dialogue for the sake of dialogue is valueless and it is necessary for us to exercise pressure North Korea so that it comes forward and engages in this serious dialogue". Pence is now on a 10-day trip in A.

Such actions, as well as Trump's vow to root out alleged unfair trade practices around the world, have sent shivers through Japan Inc, which has a huge presence in the US.

Despite North Korea's posturing, the Pentagon says the country's recent missile test failed and resulted in an explosion shortly after launch.

"It's fitting today I deliver this message aboard this great ship, a majestic ship, the USS Ronald Reagan here at Yokosuka Naval Base", Pence said.
