The Stockholm District Court ruled Tuesday that police may detain Rakhmat Akilov for a month.
Identified as Rakhmat Akilov, the Uzbek suspect rammed a truck into a department store in Stockholm, killing four people and wounding 15 others.
The 39-year-old man from Uzbekistan admitted responsibility for a "terrorist crime" at a custody hearing on Tuesday morning.
Akilov, who was asked by the judge to remove the sweater from his head, made no comment at the start of the hearing.
Court documents seen by AFP showed Akilov, who is facing a lengthy prison sentence, had requested that his state-appointed lawyer Johan Eriksson be replaced by a Sunni Muslim, saying "only a lawyer of this faith could assert his interests in the best way".

"This detention order simply reinforces what we already know", Eliasson said.
Akilov, a construction worker who was refused permanent residency in Sweden in June 2016, went underground a year ago after receiving a deportation order, police said.
Intelligence agency Sapo has said the Akilov had appeared on their radar a year ago for undisclosed reasons, but national police commissioner Dan Eliasson said "there was nothing in the system that indicated (the suspect) would do something like what he did on Friday". The British government has identified the Briton as Chris Bevington, an executive at Swedish music-streaming service Spotify.
Eight of those injured, two seriously, were still being treated in the hospital.
Sweden's prosecution authority said on Tuesday it had revoked the arrest of a second, unidentified suspect in connection with the truck attack. However, he will not be set free since he had previously received a deportation order. It gave no more details. The government responded by tightening border controls and curtailing some immigrant rights.
