  • Two new space station crew members all set for liftoff from Kazakhstan – Watch LIVE

After a six-hour flight, NASA astronaut Jack Fischer and cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin of the Russian space agency Roscosmos arrived at the International Space Station at 9:18 a.m. EDT Thursday where they will continue important scientific research.

Veteran Fyodor Yurchikhin and first-timer Jack Fischer set off in bright conditions at 8.13am United Kingdom time. He piloted an F-15E Strike Eagle in two combat tours in Southwest Asia before becoming an F-22 Raptor test pilot, and being selected to become an astronaut. With more than 3,000 hours flying time, Fischer will serve as Yurchikhin's flight engineer during launch and landing, a daunting task given the need to be fluent in Russian. "A little tight on space, but she works pretty good".

Yurchikhin and Fischer face a busy stay in space.

She is expected to receive a congratulatory phone call on Monday from U.S. President Donald Trump, NASA said on Wednesday.

They will spend more than four months aboard the orbiting laboratory before returning to Earth in early September. Russian Federation is scaling back space station staffing until its long-delayed science laboratory is flown to the orbiting outpost next year. On that day, Wilson, who on a previous mission became the first woman to command the International Space Station, will break the US astronaut record for the most cumulative time in space.

Novitskiy and Pesquet will return to Earth on June 2 and Yurchikhin will take over as commander of Expedition 52.

Mr Yurchikhin, 58, has made four space flights before but his NASA rookie crewmate is on his maiden voyage, and fears figuring out how to use the zero-gravity toilets aboard the ISS may be his biggest challenge.

A rare two-man crew is scheduled to blastoff aboard the Soyuz MS-04 spaceship and travel to the International Space Station.
