  • Mr Andrushchenko had been involved in making a documentary about Vladimir Putin's rise to power which alleged that an alliance of criminals helped him become president

A prominent Russian journalist known for articles criticizing Russia's government and President Vladimir Putin has died at a hospital in St. Petersburg after being severely beaten by unknown assailants.

In this photo taken on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, prominent Russian journalist Nikolai Andrushchenko poses in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Nikolai Andrushchenko, a 73-year-old co-founder of the weekly newspaper Novy Petersburg, had been unconscious since he was attacked on March 9.

Usov said officials demanded documents, and then "he was found near his home with a broken head".

Nikolai Andrushchenko, once a city councilor, became a thorn in the side of local politicians.

Andrushchenko's death marks the seventh fatal attack against a journalist during Putin's second presidency, and the second in 2017.

Novy Peterburg's editor-in-chief, Denis Usov, said Thursday that Andrushchenko had told his colleagues that unknown people had beaten him up before, demanding that he reveal his sources and details of his research.

Andrushchenko served a short jail sentence in 2007 after getting charged with defamation and obstruction of justice for his coverage of a murder investigation.

At the time, Andrushchenko's colleagues said they thought his beating and detention by authorities were attempts to intimidate him over Novy Petersburg's critical coverage of local authorities ahead of parliamentary elections.

Andrushchenko's attackers have not been identified and investigators have not released any information about his case. A week later a publishing house refused to print the paper, and another refused to print an edition containing an article by opposition leader Garry Kasparov.
