The French presidential election campaign was stopped in its tracks on Friday after a deadly attack on a police bus on the Champs-Elysees in the heart of Paris.

The attack, which left one policeman dead and two others injured, could change the dynamic of the race once more, according to Bruno Jeanbart, head of political studies at pollster OpinionWay.

Addressing the nation following a crisis meeting at the presidential palace, French President Francois Hollande said that all leads indicate that the attack was of a "terrorist nature".

Just days ago police in Marseille found guns and bomb-making equipment after arresting two men suspected of planning an "imminent and violent attack" ahead of the first round of the presidential election.

Pollsters see centrist Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen taking the top two places on Sunday and so going head-to-head in the run-off.

The paper also reported that Macron's chief rival for the presidency, National Front leader, Marine Le Pen, would not campaign Friday out of respect for the victims.

It is an easy generalisation to say if Le Pen wins, France pulls out of the euro and the European Union collapses. "This is the end of naiveté".

Regarding the outcome of the second round, scheduled for May 7, the poll predicts that Macron will defeat Le Pen by 66 against 34 percent.

"My government of national unity will implement this policy, so that the Republic will live, and that France will live", Le Pen said in an impromptu press conference.

Fillon said he'd maintain the state of emergency that's been in place since November 2015 when gunmen killed 130 people in attacks around Paris.

Terrorism has already been a major issue in the campaign and some feared an attack like this would happen.

French voters know that, similar to Trump, Le Pen is the only candidate who will address lax borders and a broken immigration system contributing to national security problems.

Macron, a 39-year-old moderate whom other candidates have portrayed as too inexperienced to protect France against the terror threat, warned against any attempts to use the attack for political gain.

The common assumption is that a terror attack would boost both campaigns - especially Le Pen's.
