  • North Korea tensions seen in propaganda, miscommunication

There has also been ratcheted up rhetoric from the USA and Pyongyang, with the latter's state media warning Thursday that a pre-emptive strike by North Korea would result in the US and South Korea being "completely destroyed in an instant".

Pointing to the quarter-century since the United States first confronted North Korea over its attempts to build nuclear weapons, the vice president said a period of patience had followed. He warned the North, which has conducted missile and nuclear tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions, that the "era of strategic patience" was over.

Tensions have escalated over North Korean moves to accelerate its weapons development. If they were, North Korea wouldn't have been able to conduct over the years five nuclear tests and a series of ballistic missile tests. While the United States moved an aircraft carrier to the Korean coast to intimidate Pyongyang, North Korea made a display of its missile strength and tested a missile which failed, though it was seen as an act of defiance.

Asked for his statements on the failed missile test, U.S. President Donald Trump said, "They gotta behave".

However he said that "all options are on the table" to deal with North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions.

Meanwhile, US Vice President Mike Pence reiterated his country's commitment to guarantee the security of Japan in facing North Korea's threats.

"This morning's provocation from the north is just the latest reminder of the risks each one of you face each and every day in the defense of the freedom of the people of South Korea and the defense of America in this part of the world", he said. But he told the sailors, "as all of you know, readiness is the key". How to stop him is a puzzle, but it is one to which Trump and other USA leaders need to find a solution.

The US president later referenced China rejecting routine coal shipments from Pyongyang while North Korea appears on the verge of another nuclear test. With no USA trade representative yet in office and other key negotiator positions still unfilled, such nitty-gritty discussions will have to come later.

"If the USA is reckless enough to use military means it would mean from that very day, an all-out war", he said.

China made a plea for a return to negotiations.
