  • Here's The Three-Row SUV That Electric Startup NIO Wants To Sell In China Next Year

And while it's certain that the likes of Audi and VW, which both showed off cutting-edge plug in concepts, will still be in business when their cars are scheduled to go into production, the fate of numerous other firms, particularly those hailing from China, displaying their automotive wares this year is less certain.

SHANGHAI Chinese electric vehicle start-up Nio will start selling its first mass-production vehicle next year, the firm said in a statement on Wednesday, as it unveiled its ES8 SUV car at the Shanghai auto show.

NIO also announced it will begin pre-selling the fastest electric auto in the world, its flagship supercar, the NIO EP9.

The full-size, all-wheel-drive ES8 SUV has electric motors at the front and and the rear. Curiously, it's been designed for battery-swapping, as well as conventional recharging, Nio claiming that the manufacturing and supply chain to support this is already in place. The length from bumper to bumper is 196 inches, and the entire body and chassis are made from aluminum to keep the weight low.

The vehicle is called NIO ES8 and it is a full size 7-seater electric SUV.

The official launch of the ES8 is expected to take place later this year, with deliveries slated to begin sometime in 2018.

The Founder and Chairman of NIO, William Li, commented: "Today we unveiled our new production vehicle, the NIO ES8 to the China market". The vehicle has been tested in Yakeshi in Inner Mongolia, where temperatures can reach -22 degrees Fahrenheit as well as Melbourne and Madura, Australia where temperatures can reach over 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additionally, the company plans to make an additional, second batch of ten EP9 supercars in addition to the six that were already made for investors. In February 2017, they also set the record for fastest autonomous lap with the EP9 at the Circuit of the Americas. One of the EP9s holds the record for fastest lap by an electric vehicle of the Nurburgring Nordschliefe, while a further record for fastest autonomous lap was set in February at the Circuit of the Americas.
