New England Patriots Fire Back at NY Times Over White House Photo

The Times posted pictures on its NYT Sports Twitter account that showed members of the team, owner Robert Kraft and coach Bill Belichick posing with Trump in celebration of their come-from-behind win over the Atlanta Falcons. A photo taken of the team, behind the President on the south lawn, shows a considerably smaller number of players compared to the team's previous visit in 2015 when President Barack Obama was in office.

Brady is a longtime friend of Trump, and said in the early days of the Republican's election campaign a year ago he hoped his golfing buddy would win the election against political rival Hillary Clinton.

The Patriots' reaction was as swift as a linebacker's blitz.

The Patriots themselves took corrective action, calling out the Times for running photos that "lack context".

"An earlier version of this article included photos comparing the size of the Patriots' gathering at the White House in 2015 and the gathering on Wednesday", read the correction. Team spokesman Stacey James told The Boston Globe the White House chose to have the staff sit.

The mother-of-two's criticism comes on the same day her National Football League husband Tom Brady skipped a visit to the White House with his New England Patriot's teammates. "Today, we had 34".

Trump, who appears to have a love-hate relationship with what he has called the "failing" New York Times, was quick to weigh in.

"Nobody asked, nobody cared [when] we had 27 people go to the White House in 2005", Mr James said. Others, like Martellus Bennett and Devin McCourty, did not go for political reasons, while CSN New England reported that some players simply could not make it due to prior obligations. That turned out not to be the case, but there was a new crowd size controversy involving the Trump administration that had people- including the president himself- talking Thursday morning.

It also led Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway to bring up "alternate facts" in her defense of Spicer.
