The government previously announced that security around candidates and the election has been stepped up ahead of Sunday's first-round vote.

Agents from the French domestic security agency, backed by elite police units, conducted the arrests. Authorities arrested two men in the southern city of Marseille for planning an attack during the presidential race, Interior Minister Matthias Fekl said on Tuesday.

Molins said evidence to date indicated that the two suspects were preparing "an imminent violent act on French territory, but it is not yet possible to say precisely when, or what their target or targets were".

"These two radicalized men, born in 1987 and 1993, of French nationality, intended to commit in the very short-term - by that I mean in the coming days - an attack on French soil", Fekl told a news conference as cited by Reuters.

Opinion polls have for months predicted that National Front (FN) chief Marine Le Pen would attract enough votes to make it to the two-way runoff on May 7 but the gap with other contenders has narrowed, and the rhetoric of her party has sharpened.

The conservative Francois Fillon won his nomination by a long way, but has since been hampered by an investigation into the abuse of public funds.

Issues range from the 10% unemployment rate and the slow recovery of the economy, to the terror attacks in Paris and Nice which killed more than 230 people.

Candidates have been heavily guarded during the election campaign, but so far there have been few security scares. Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron are am.

A hologram of French Left party leader and candidate for the 2017 French presidential election Jean-Luc Melenchon speaks to supporters who gathered in Grenoble, southeastern France, Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Conclusions should not be drawn then however and investor focus should instead turn to who of Fillon, Macron and Melanchon will face off Le Pen in the second round.

Polls suggest that Macron would be favourite to win in the run-off.Le Pen said the choice for French voters was between her rivals' "savage globalisation" and her patriotism.

"Don't believe what they tell you", he said.

Speaking to French television channel BFM, Le Pen said that her country did not defend the Algerians who fought for France in the right way. "The French people are the owners of France and they must decide who can move here", affirmed Marine Le Pen. Those subjects won her her core backing, and she hopes it can give her boost with about 30 percent of voters still undecided.

A jobs-for-the-family financial scandal has punctured the campaign of one-time front-runner Francois Fillon and fueled the raging distrust between voters and their elected representatives.
