  • Theresa May announces for General Election in June 8

The early election is the latest twist a turbulent year in British politics, which was plunged into turmoil when the country unexpectedly voted to leave the European Union last year.

May enjoys a runaway lead in opinion polls over the main opposition Labour Party, and the British economy has so far defied predictions of a slowdown, offering her a strong base to launch a poll some lawmakers described as "opportunistic".

Riding high in the opinion polls, May is seeking to increase her slim majority of 17 in the 650-seat Commons before the battles begin with the European Union over Britain's exit bill and future trade and immigration ties.

The presenter called on the former Deputy Prime Minister's party to run a "let's stick together job" with opposition parties in order to put an end to Brexit, which was backed by 17.4million people.

Parliament will be dissolved on May 2 to allow the the formal election campaign to begin.

British lawmakers have voted by a resounding 522 to 13 to back Prime Minister Theresa May's call for a national election on June 8.

"Only by voting Labour can we get rid of Theresa May and stop further cuts to public services".

The governing Conservative Party now has a narrow majority of 17 seats in the House of Commons. "It's about. getting the right deal from Europe", she said.

In response to that criticism, the then ruling coalition of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats passed the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act in 2011 to prevent future snap elections from being used as a political tool.

Nicola Sturgeon however said her decision to seek an early election, after repeatedly stating she had no intention of doing so, was purely for party political advantage.

Mrs May said all Labour had to offer the country was "bankruptcy and chaos" while a Conservative victory would strengthen her hand in the forthcoming Brexit negotiations.

United Kingdom lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favor of a motion put forward by Prime Minister Theresa May to allow for an early national election on June 8.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn told her: "She says it's about leadership, yet is refusing to defend her record in television debates and it's not hard to see why".

Britain's next election had been scheduled for May 2020, but a two-thirds majority vote in parliament could overrule that in Wednesday's vote, which British media reported could come at around 1300 GMT after an hour and a half of debate.

Piers Corbyn accused the corporation of a series of cover ups to protect the establishment - that included making attacks on his brother - but insisted Labour could still win a "reasonable" majority.

May shot back by saying she had "been answering his questions and debating these matters every Wednesday parliament has been sitting since I became PM".

In a surprise U-turn, May called Tuesday for a general election as she tries to make strong gains against the opposition before the tough Brexit negotiations.

"But this is a prime minister who promised there wouldn't be one".

May earlier ruled out participating in televised debates with other leaders.
