  • Trump calls Erdogan after referendum win

A Turkish government minister on Tuesday (April 18) blasted the EU's "unacceptable" appeal for a probe into alleged irregularities in the referendum on boosting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's powers.

He says the party's next stop is Turkey's constitutional court and, if it is unsuccessful there, then the European Court of Human Rights.

"Poland acknowledges the results of Turkey's referendum on 16 April 2017 and awaits their official confirmation", the ministry said in a statement.

"Wait!" Erdogan told supporters.

The EU has called on the civil authorities in Turkey to launch a "transparent investigation" into the referendum result granting the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sweeping new powers.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed concerns a referendum on constitutional amendments did not live up to global standards, telling voting monitors to "know your place".

On Tuesday, CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu slammed the Supreme Election Board's decision to count unsealed ballots in the referendum.

The U.S. State Department said it had taken note of the European monitors' concerns and looked forward to a final report, urging the Turkish government to protect the rights and freedoms of all citizens, however they voted.

Mehmet Hadimi Yakupoglu, the Republican People's Party's representative to the High Electoral Board, said the party had asked the board to annul Sunday's referendum "because we weren't able to ensure election safety".

Observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe said Sunday's referendum had been an uneven contest. Critics have warned that passing the constitutional changes would be a serious blow to democracy and benefit Erdogan and his purge of political enemies including media that is critical of his rule.

"We would like other countries and institutions to show respect to the decision of the nation", he said, calling allies to now show greater awareness of Turkey's "sensitivities" in the "fight against terror".

Hundreds of people are queuing in front of Turkey's election board to submit petitions requesting that the electoral authority reverse a controversial decision during Sunday's referendum to accept ballots without official stamps.
